“It’s great for the environment, but it’s about creating jobs and economic opportunity,” Sullivan said. “This is a huge generational chance to create tens of thousands of new jobs from practically nothing. Let’s get it right from an equity and inclusion perspective.”

Ørsted’s Ocean Wind 1 offshore wind project earned a group of state permits late last week. If the process remains on track and other federal, state and local permits are approved, land-based construction could start this fall with power being generated by the wind farm before the end of 2024.

This full-time paid training program for wind turbine technicians pays $15 per hour and lasts 22 weeks. It is designed to ready you to join the industry by gaining practical skills and developing the capabilities needed to become an offshore wind technician.

RPS is one of more than a half-dozen companies that provide offshore industries along the Mid-Atlantic with federally-required trained observers, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Their job is to be on watch 24/7 for protected marine species and they have the power to delay or even shut down work if they get too close.

More than $300,000 in funding will be distributed to Camden County College (CCC) and Camden County Technical Schools (CCTS) to train workers for careers in heavy steel offshore wind component manufacturing.

“I think we all recognize there’s significant coastal issues coming up now and moving forward. It’s kind of a no-brainer,” Deputy Mayor Dan Maxwell said. “So, as we focus on that, we acknowledge that we need to be looking out for these types of grants so we’re not dumping it all on our taxpayers.”

In New Jersey, the Ocean Wind offshore wind farm will be aiding the state's climate goals. Once it's operational in late 2024, it will be able to produce 1,100 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 500,000 homes.

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has given the green light on the state’s third solicitation of offshore wind capacity.
